Boy, 8, Helps Pull Mother From Bottom of Backyard Pool

An 8-year-old boy helped rescue his mother Monday after he found the 43-year-old woman unconscious at the bottom of the backyard swimming pool, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The boy and his mother, both from New York, were visiting his grandmother at her home in the 18600 block of Ludlow Street. The mother did not know how to swim and was holding on to the side of the pool, kicking her feet in the water, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.

The boy left his mother for a few minutes, and when he returned about 4:45 p.m. saw her at the bottom of the pool, Collis said. He and his grandmother pulled the woman out of the water with a pool hook.

The woman was unconscious but breathing by the time firefighters arrived, Collis said. She was taken to Granada Hills Community Hospital. Her condition was unavailable.
