Police Warn of Couple Using Subscription Scam

Share

The Santa Monica Police Department warned residents to be on the lookout for a pair of scam artists selling door-to-door magazine subscriptions.

The suspects, identified as an African American couple in their 20s, offer overpriced subscriptions that they say are intended to help pay their college tuition, said Lt. Gary Gallinot.

If the person answering the door is uninterested, the suspects suggest a donation to the Boys and Girls Club. They then ask for a check payable to “Richard Morrison’s Outreach.”

The address and phone number on a bogus charitable donation receipt they give donors is that of a Best Western motel in Los Angeles, said Gallinot.

Some residents who have let the pair into their homes have later reported missing cash and valuables, he said.

Gallinot said the female suspect goes by the name “Michele O’Neal.” Anyone with information on the suspects can contact Det. Duke Torrez at (310) 458-8961 or 458-8451.
