Rail Corridor

Re your March 4 editorial, “Immense Value in Rail Corridor”: The Alameda Corridor is vital to Los Angeles County’s economic development. It will significantly upgrade the competitive stance for our county as a trading partner with the Pacific Rim. However, the editorial ignores the mitigation required by the 30 cities in the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys.

The residents of these valleys will be impacted daily by 100 trains, two miles in length. The 55 highway-rail grade crossings will have delays up to 24 minutes. This constant inconvenience is extremely dangerous for our emergency vehicles that are responding to 911 calls.

While the economic advantages to the Alameda Corridor are many, area residents need to take action to ease many of the problems the expanded freight system will create. Members of Congress and the private sector need to provide funding for the Alameda Corridor, East--Gateway to America plan. It will allocate $950 million toward creating underpasses and depressing track for the valleys’ 55 grade crossings.
