Lewis deSoto’s sculpture “Ship” sets sail at the Christopher Grimes Gallery. The 5-foot iron model of a 20th century steamship is based on blueprints from Harlan and West (the Scottish duo who fashioned the ill-fated Titanic) and chugs around the gallery on hidden wheels in a fog of its own making.

The Truth is . . . in Tustin? X-philes can experience the intrigue of Fox’s hit series “The X-Files” firsthand by attending the two-day “Los Angeles X-Files Expo” inside a hangar at the Marine Corps Air Station. Cast members Mitch Pileggi (Lt. Skinner), Nick Lea (Agent Krycek) and Dean Haglund (Lone Gunmen “Langley”) are scheduled to appear.

Players of the oversized Japanese taiko drum are more than percussionists. They’re dancers as well, spinning and hopping as they strike deep resonant tones from the skins. This ancient tradition is given a modern jazz twist or two by the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble of Tokyo, which includes koto stringed-instrument and shinobue flute players as well taiko drummers from Japan and the U.S.

Carlos Varela is regarded as Cuba’s Bob Dylan, a singer-songwriter who addresses the social and political concerns of the country’s youth with such emotional force that he’s become a cultural icon there. Varela makes his L.A. debut at LunaPark as part of his first U.S. tour.
