Whitaker to Face Lane in Atlantic City

Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills will fight Garing Lane of Hillcrest, Md., in an eight-round bout March 27 in Atlantic City. Whitaker, 14-0 with 13 knockouts, won an eight-round decision over Everett Martin on Feb. 27 at Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City. Lane is 16-14-2 with eight knockouts.

The fight is part of an all-heavyweights card headlined by former U.S. Olympian Lawrence Clay-Bey (7-0, six knockouts), who will face Jose Ribalta (39-14-1, 28 knockouts).

BASKETBALL

Greco honored: Crescenta Valley High’s Michelle Greco has been selected as the Pacific League’s most valuable player in girls’ basketball, the third consecutive season she has received the honor.

Greco, a preseason All-American, averaged 22.2 points, 9.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists for the Falcons (24-3).

HOCKEY

Championship hosts: The Ventura Mariners will host the USA Hockey Junior B National Championships from March 27-31 at the Easy Street Arena in Simi Valley.

As hosts, the Mariners are assured three games in the championships, which includes 11 other teams from the country’s five Junior B leagues.

FOOTBALL

Coan promoted: Bill Coan, an assistant freshman-sophomore football coach at Chatsworth High, has been promoted to varsity head coach. He replaces Myron Gibford, who retired after 19 years teaching at Chatsworth.

Coan, 34, a physical education instructor at Chatsworth, is a Canoga Park High graduate.

“He’ll do a good job,” Gibford said. “He’s a real student of the game.”

SOFTBALL

Player of week: Northridge’s Chelo Lopez was chosen Big West player of the week for her performance last week against conference rivals Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.

Lopez, who leads Northridge with a .417 average, went six for 11 (.545) with nine runs batted in. Five of her hits went for extra bases, and Lopez, a first baseman, did not commit an error in 36 fielding opportunities.

SOCCER

Murray is money: Quartz Hill senior forward Shuana Murray has been chosen Golden League player of the year in girls’ soccer. Murray scored 24 goals and had nine assists for the league champions.

Palmdale senior sweeper Kim Britton has been selected Golden League player of the year in boys’ soccer for the second consecutive year.

Hart junior midfielder Erin Misaki has been chosen Foothill League player of the year. Misaki had 19 goals and 17 assists this season as the Indians won their fifth consecutive league title.

VOLLEYBALL

Nargi eager to play: Taft High opposite hitter Joe Nargi, who sprained his right ankle in a match Tuesday against Monroe, said he plans to play Tuesday in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Kennedy.

“That’s probably one of the biggest games of our season,” said Nargi, a 6-foot-5 senior. “I’ve got four or five days to rest and I’ll stay in all weekend and lay down and ice it.”
