Long-Time Principal Hawkins Dead at 66

Alvin Hawkins, a long-time principal and administrator in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, died Thursday of natural causes. He was 66.

Hawkins had been principal of Kraemer and Tuffree junior high schools as well as Esperanza and El Dorado high schools. At the time of his death, he was director of curriculum and instruction for the school district, and was a member of the city’s Transportation Circulation Commission.

Hawkins also often donated more than 80 hours a month to the Fullerton Police Department’s Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol Program, which performs non-enforcement duties and frees police officers for patrol. He worked with uniformed officers at the front desk, helping residents with a wide range of problems.

He is survived by daughters Cynthia L. Magliano of Yorba Linda, Deborah L. Hawkins of Costa Mesa, Kathryn A. Wysocki of Chino Hills and Susan M. Dumlao of Fullerton, and by five grandchildren. His wife, Dona Rae, preceded him in death in 1994.

Arrangements are pending at McAulay and Wallace Fullerton Mortuary.
