Petition Drive Seeks Light, Crosswalk at Olympic Blvd.
Church and community leaders announced a petition drive Wednesday aimed at convincing the City Council to install a crosswalk and flashing yellow light at a street where former teachers union President Helen Bernstein was killed last year.
Bernstein, president of United Teachers-Los Angeles from 1990 to 1996, was hit by a car April 3 as she crossed Olympic Boulevard near Masselin Avenue.
Several serious accidents have occurred there since. Residents have tried to get a crosswalk and flashing yellow light installed, said the Rev. Helen Liesenberg.
“It’s really quite dangerous,” she said. “They drive like it’s a freeway.”
Liesenberg said lights and a crosswalk would be a fitting tribute to Bernstein, “who worked so diligently for the benefit of the youth and teachers of the Los Angeles school district.”
Anyone who lives in Los Angeles can sign the petition, Liesenberg said. The City Council must approve the light and crosswalk. Information: (213) 938-9105.
