The Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Friday that school police officer Joel Shanbrom died from multiple shotgun wounds.

Shanbrom, 32, was killed Wednesday night while his wife and 3-year-old son were upstairs in their Northridge home, according to official reports.

Police initially described the crime as a home-invasion robbery but broadened their investigation after learning that nothing was taken from the rented house and that two hours had passed before the shooting was reported.

Jennifer Shanbrom’s mother, Diane Bates, called police. Bates, who lives with the couple, found the body on the couch when she returned from an outing.

Los Angeles Police Department investigators are focusing part of their probe on the financial dealings of Shanbrom and his 28-year-old wife. The couple worked as insurance and investment brokers to supplement Joel Shanbrom’s $47,000 salary from the Los Angeles Unified School District police force.
