Man Charged With Harassing Officers

A Costa Mesa man has pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor charges of making harassing phone calls to police investigating his girlfriend’s murder.

Sunny Adrienne Sudweeks, a 26-year-old photography student, was found strangled in her Costa Mesa apartment 13 months ago. The case remains unsolved.

Police said Richard Barden Johnson, Sudweeks’ boyfriend at the time of her death, has made repeated and disruptive calls to investigating officers, mostly to complain about how the case is being handled.

“He’s been causing us problems lately in that he keeps calling up and harassing the investigating officers,” said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Ron Smith. “Most of it is incoherent rambling. He wants details he imagines we’re withholding.”

Johnson, 30, was released from Orange County Jail on Tuesday and will return to court for a hearing Friday, authorities said.
