Valencia’s Single Run Has Quartz Hill Upset

Nicole Giampaolo’s run-scoring single in the first inning was all Valencia High needed Tuesday to upset error-plagued Quartz Hill, 1-0, in a nonleague game at Valencia.

Giampaolo had three of Valencia’s five hits off Quartz Hill ace Jodie Cox.

The Rebels (5-2-1), who made four errors, had just three hits. Valencia, in its third year of varsity softball, improved to 6-2.

In other games:

Agoura 7, Newbury Park 3--Melissa Fetman went three for four and led Agoura’s eight-hit attack against Newbury Park (3-2) in a Marmonte League opener for both teams.

Agoura (7-3) scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead. Jennifer Grennan (5-1) allowed five hits, struck out three and walked two.

Simi Valley 7, Channel Islands 0--The Pioneers (6-0) capped the scoring with a five-run fifth on four hits, including three for extra bases, in a Marmonte League opener for both teams at Santa Susanna Park.

Jennie Shields, Tracie Hall and Cindy Gray each had two hits for Simi Valley. Lori Tande (4-0) threw a three-hitter, struck out six and walked two.

Camarillo 7, Royal 0--Cindy Ball pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and had a triple in four at-bats for Camarillo (3-0, 1-0) in a Marmonte League game at Royal.

Thousand Oaks 4, Westlake 2--The Lancers (3-1-1) benefited from three Westlake errors and scored three runs in the fourth inning in a Marmonte League opener for both teams.

Kim Martin’s run-scoring double in the fourth gave Thousand Oaks a 4-1 advantage.

Westlake (4-4) scored once in the seventh and had runners at second and third with no out. But poor base running resulted in a double play and a pop-up ended the game.

Highland 5, Apple Valley 4--Michelle Wintermute’s two-run home run in the fifth inning gave the Bulldogs (8-0), ranked No. 3 in the region, a 5-1 lead and Highland held on to beat visiting Apple Valley in a nonleague game.

Apple Valley pounded 12 hits--all singles--off Nicole Rawson (3-0).

Highland had eight hits, including five for extra bases. Ashley De’rrico and Jennifer Smith each had two hits, and Rawson homered.

Ventura 2, Santa Barbara 1--Julie Essray scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the sixth against Santa Barbara (4-3, 0-2) in a Channel League game at Ventura.

Meaghin Nuckols (1-2) threw a no-hitter, struck out four and walked two for Ventura (3-3, 1-1).

L.A. Baptist 7, Fillmore 5--Nikki Girard (7-1) struck out 15 and allowed two earned runs, and she also had three hits, stole five bases and scored three runs for L.A. Baptist (7-1) in a nonleague game at L.A. Baptist.

Jillian Rice had a double and three runs batted in for L.A. Baptist.

Santa Paula 12, Santa Clara 1--Jobie Perez pitched a two-hitter, striking out four and walking none, while Jessieka Mata drove in three runs with a double and a triple for Santa Paula (3-2, 2-0) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara (2-4, 0-2).

Hoover 4, Canyon 3--Talin Haftvani had three hits, including a run-scoring double and a run-scoring single, for host Hoover (7-2) in a nonleague game.

Diane Lee had a double and a run-scoring single for the Tornadoes, while Cori Herbert (7-2) struck out six and walked three.

Calabasas 9, Nordhoff 1--Candy Wang threw a three-hitter and Meredith Eisz had two hits in the Coyotes’ Frontier League victory at Nordhoff.

El Camino Real 2, San Fernando 0--Jacqui Goodchild doubled and Jessica Riddle singled to drive in the only runs for El Camino Real (8-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Stephanie Frasco (8-3) threw a three-hitter and struck out five for El Camino Real.

Kennedy 5, Chatsworth 0--Patty Del Real pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts and had three hits for the Golden Cougars (8-2, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Brand Park.

Gina Everett had the only hit for Chatsworth (2-5, 0-1).

Lina Gutierrez had two hits and an RBI for Kennedy.

Cleveland 9, Taft 2--Angela Veliz had three hits and Letizia Lucero hit a grand slam and finished with two hits and five RBI for the Cavaliers (6-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Cleveland.

Cleveland pitcher Kate Levin (6-0) threw a three-hitter, striking out three and walking one. She also had two hits.

Reseda 11, Canoga Park 0--Tawny Marquez had three hits and two runs batted in for the Regents (2-4) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Reseda that was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Vicky Rodriguez had the only two hits for Canoga Park (2-4), which committed seven errors.

Monroe 10, North Hollywood 2--Cori Jordahl (3-3) pitched a two-hitter for host Monroe (4-5, 1-0), striking out 13 in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener.

Sylmar 11, Grant 0--Krystal Mejia hit a two-run double in a nine-run second inning for Sylmar (4-5) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Sylmar. Kim Inks had two hits for Grant (4-3).

Village Christian 3, Oak Park 0--Emilee Taritero had two doubles and Jackie Aranda (7-1) had three hits and pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts in a nonleague game at Oak Park.
