Mayor to Hold Meeting to Oppose School Bond

Share

Mayor Omar Bradley is organizing a City Hall meeting Saturday to oppose a $107-million general obligation school bond issue on the April 14 ballot.

The mayor objects to the bond because it is backed by Randolph E. Ward, the state-appointed superintendent. “Randy Ward doesn’t represent this community,” Bradley said. “He doesn’t live here and doesn’t understand how this community operates. And he doesn’t plan to be here during the duration of paying the bond off for 25 years.”

The bond issue is being placed on the ballot by the Compton Unified School District, which has been under state supervision since 1993. The money is needed to repair badly neglected schools, some of which have not been painted in 20 years. If the bond passes, the school district will be eligible for $21 million in matching state funds.
