Council Reconsidering Treasure Island Plan
Public opposition has prompted the City Council to reconsider several issues related to the redevelopment of the Treasure Island mobile home park into an upscale seaside resort.
The resort’s projected height, which could block ocean views, and the development of 37 homes on the 30-acre site has raised the ire of community activists and environmentalists, who voiced their objections at a City Council meeting this week.
Merrill Lynch, the landowner, wants to build a 100-room resort with 25 villas and a bluff-top park, in addition to the homes. The City Council has endorsed the project because, among other reasons, it would add an estimated $1.5 million in annual hotel-bed tax money.
But the site “should be considered a treasured resource, not just a source of revenue,” said Don Pendergast, president of the city’s biggest civic group, Village Laguna.
The council will hold another meeting on the resort proposal April 28 in the City Hall council chambers, 505 Forest Ave.
