High Costs Force the Cancellation of Lions Club Parade

Share

The annual Lions Club parade, part of the group’s Fish Fry activities, has been canceled this year because of high costs.

“Basically, the club has decided the expense associated with the parade is too high and we would rather take that money and give it to charities,” said Mike Scheafer, the club’s district governor.

The parade was canceled in 1996 but revived last year to the applause of fans who love to watch local notables, bands and business owners march down Harbor Boulevard toward the smell of frying fish at Lions Park. The parade this year would have cost about $20,000, mostly to close the boulevard and to hire police officers for security.

The Fish Fry will continue as planned May 29-31 at Lions Park. Proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club, Little League, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen and other organizations. More than $1 million has been raised in 53 years.
