RECORD RACK

While packaged as a tribute to television’s doe-eyed, long-legged lawyer of the moment, this album is in truth a showcase for Shepard, the singer-songwriter-pianist whose politely buoyant “Searchin’ My Soul” is the show’s theme song and the album’s opening track. A few other folk-based, R&B-inflected; Shepard originals are included here, scattered among her versions of old pop chestnuts from the ‘60s and ‘70s such as “Walk Away Renee” and “Hooked on a Feeling,” which the singer has also performed on the program.

Predictably, these tracks are all longer on feisty earnestness than they are on sophistication or daring. Shepard’s gritty, emotive voice and subtlety-be-damned delivery bring to mind a sweeter Melissa Etheridge, and her aggressively accessible roots-pop arrangements seem designed to appeal to sitcom-addicted couch potatoes of all ages. So even if Shepard’s cozy reading of “I Only Wanna Be With You” won’t make you forget Dusty Springfield’s version, it’s still a perfectly serviceable soundtrack for your refrigerator run during commercial breaks.
