Kansas City outfielder Jeff Conine worked out and is expected to be activated today after missing the first part of the season with a strained stomach muscle.

The Royals said catcher Sal Fasano, out since April 20 with an abdominal muscle strain, would be sent to Class triple-A Omaha for rehabilitation.

The Royals obtained Conine from the Florida Marlins in November for minor league pitcher Blaine Mull. Conine hit .242 with 17 homers and drove in 61 runs for the Marlins last year.

Fasano began the season in Omaha, but was called up when catcher Mike Macfarlane was traded to Oakland for Shane Mack. He had appeared in four games.

The Royals will still need to take one player off the 25-man roster to make room for Conine.

Third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Mets because of a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder. He is expected to be out for 3-6 weeks.

Alfonzo felt pain in the shoulder while making a throw to first in the sixth inning of Sunday’s 5-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies and took himself out of the game.

“I’ve made that throw thousands of times,” Alfonzo said. “I guess this was just going to happen.”
