Poll vault: Chatsworth High has risen to No. 2 in the state rankings by Cal-Hi Sports.

The Chancellors (22-2) are behind top-ranked Clovis (27-2). Hart (20-3) is rated No. 11.

In softball, Santa Ana Mater Dei (21-2) is No. 1. Simi Valley (20-4) is No. 8 and Camarillo (14-4) is No. 17.

Call to arms: The Pacific Suns, an independent minor league team which will begin playing in Oxnard this season, signed Eric King, a veteran major league pitcher who won 54 games with the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians.

King, who was born in Oxnard, played for Royal High and Moorpark College.

Also on the Suns’ staff is Dennis Moeller from Granada Hills, a left-hander who played for the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates.

SWIMMING

Taking the plunge: Jenny Lucht, a diver from Littleton, Colo., has signed with Cal State Northridge.

The Matador women also signed Amanda Mullennix, a breaststroke specialist from University of San Diego High, and the men’s team added Nathan Johnsen, a backstroke specialist from Sunset High in Portland, Ore.

Moving on: La Reina High sophomore Sara Leibowitz, the Regents’ starting goalkeeper last season, hopes to transfer to Chaminade or Thousand Oaks, her father, George Leibowitz, said.

Leibowitz, a Simi Valley resident, allowed 19 goals in 22 games. Her father, who said his daughter will know her new school by Sunday, said she no longer wants to attend an all-girls school and she was unhappy with the level of competition in the Tri-Valley League.

TRACK AND FIELD

Committed: Matthew Torres of Nordhoff High, third in the 1997 state Division IV cross-country championships, has committed to Westmont College in Montecito.

Torres won the 800 meters at the Ventura County championships on Friday in a school-record 1:54.30.

Signing up: Heather Sickler of Camarillo High, defending Southern Section Division I and Masters Meet champion in the girls’ pole vault, has signed with UCLA.

Sickler, who won her second consecutive Ventura County title on Friday, holds the region record of 12 feet 3 1/2 inches.

She cleared that height to win the Masters Meet after clearing a then-region record of 12-1 1/2 to win the Division I title in the Southern Section divisional championships.

AUTO RACING

Second-best: Cory Kruseman of Ventura finished second in the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event Sunday at Thunderbowl Speedway in Tulare.

Troy Rutherford of Ojai finished in eighth place and Ed Patterson of Ventura was 10th.
