The Santa Monica Museum of Art reopens at its new space at Bergamot Station with two inaugural exhibitions: Liza Lou’s monumental beaded environments “Back Yard” and “Kitchen,” and “Beck & Al Hansen: Playing With Matches,” a survey of mixed-media artworks by rocker Beck and his grandfather, Happenings/Fluxus artist Al Hansen. Lou’s domestic environments are made entirely of millions of tiny glass beads. The 600-square-foot “Back Yard” includes fruit trees, a rose garden, clothesline, barbecue, various bugs and nearly a million blades of grass. “Playing With Matches” will include collages, assemblages, drawings, photographs and audio and video materials by both Beck and Hansen.

8 pm: Dance

Created using improvisational movement games and an assortment of unlikely props, the collaborative pieces performed by the New York-based male trio the Second Hand combine dance, comedy and acrobatics. The members are faculty artists-in-residence at State University of New York, Binghamton, where they met as students. But they spend half the year on the road, have a taste for incorporating used or shopworn oddities into their act (hence the group’s name) and are earning an international reputation for what the New York Times called “superb, even spellbinding physical control.”
