UCLA Wins Water Polo Title With 7-3 Victory

Coralie Simmons scored three goals Sunday as top-seeded UCLA beat third-seeded California, 7-3, in the championship match of the women’s water polo collegiate tournament at the USC McDonald’s Swim Stadium. It is the Bruins’ third consecutive national title in the sport.

Lindsay Welsh, Suze Gardner and Ellen Estes each scored two goals as No. 2 Stanford defeated No. 4 Hawaii, 10-4, in the third-place match.

Simmons, a junior, was named the most valuable player of the competition after scoring three of her nine goals in the championship match. UCLA goalie Nicolle Payne had 13 saves.

Catharine von Schwarz, Erin Golaboski, Amanda Gall and Robin Beauregard each scored once for UCLA (35-1). Alisa vonHartitzsch, Alicia Razzari and Heather Petri scored for Cal (27-6).

The Bruins are a combined 95-3 the past three seasons.

USC beat UC Santa Barbara, 4-2, in the fifth-place match; San Diego State topped Massachusetts, 8-3, in the seventh-place match, and Maryland defeated Michigan, 5-4, in the ninth-place match.
