Fast company: Marion Jones ran the 100 meters faster than any woman other than Florence Griffith Joyner by winning in 10.71 seconds Tuesday during a meet at Chengdu, China.

Griffith Joyner set the world record of 10.49 in 1988 in Indianapolis, and had times of 10.61, 10.62 and 10.70 that year.

The 22-year-old Jones, who graduated from Thousand Oaks High, eclipsed her 10.79 run Saturday in Osaka, Japan, as the best this year, and knocked 0.05 seconds off her previous best of 10.76 set in August in Brussels.

FOOTBALL

Coming home: Lance Fauria, a former tight end at Crespi High and Washington, has been hired as offensive coordinator at Chaminade. Fauria coached last season at Central Catholic High in San Antonio.

His brother, Christian, is a tight end for the Seattle Seahawks.

New frontier: Tight end Jeff Wilk of Calabasas High will walk on at Arizona.

Wilk, an All-Frontier League selection as a junior, missed most of last season with torn knee ligaments.

BASKETBALL

On the dotted line: Pierre Elize, a guard from Valley College, has signed a letter of intent with Northern Colorado. He is the fourth Monarch player this season to sign with a four-year school.

Two Monarch women signed with Division I schools, according to Coach John Taylor. Tanya McLaughlin, a 5-foot-11 forward from Canyon High, signed with Lamar. Former Taft standout Nyoki McKeith signed with Southwestern Louisiana.

A step up: John D’Agostin has been selected girls’ coach at Burbank High, Athletic Director Dave Kemp said.

D’Agostin, a junior varsity coach at Burroughs for the past four years, replaces Steve Lassiter.

GOLF

On the green: Chris Zambri of Camarillo, a 1988 graduate of Westlake High, has been granted a sponsor’s exemption into the PGA Tour’s GTE Byron Nelson Classic this week at the TPC at Las Colinas in Irving, Texas.

SOFTBALL

Rain delay: First-round games in the City Section playoffs that were rained out Tuesday will be played throughout the week as weather permits, officials announced.

Quarterfinal games scheduled for Thursday will be played Monday.

Stepping down: Paul Siegel has resigned as coach at Poly High after three seasons in order to pursue a master’s degree in education.

Siegel had a record of 20-24 in three seasons. His best showing was in 1997 when the Parrots were 9-7.

VOLLEYBALL

Changeover: Chris Rundle has resigned as girls’ coach at Westlake High and will be replaced by Karen Suppan Klee, former Chaminade girls’ volleyball coach.

Klee coached Chaminade from 1990-95.

Halls of Ivy: Middle blocker Carissa Abbott of Harvard-Westlake has committed to Yale.
