A developer who is converting a former defense industry plant into a 27-acre retail complex in Harbor Gateway broke ground on the project Wednesday and announced plans to open the center in early 1999.
Phoenix-based Vestar Development Co. is turning the former McDonnell Douglas plant on the corner of 190th Street and Normandie Avenue into the Harbor Gateway Center, a multipurpose retail complex. The center will include an AutoNation USA, Office Depot, Extended Stay America Hotel and a food court with several restaurants.
Business and city leaders said the complex will boost the local economy and help revitalize the area. The complex will produce at least 110 jobs and an estimated $166 million in retail sales.
“The 15th Council District has been especially hard hit by the cutbacks in the Defense Department budget,” said Harbor district Councilman Rudy Svorinich. “This groundbreaking signifies the successful conversion of a defense plant.”
