A dedication ceremony scheduled for Saturday at Chatsworth Park South will celebrate the Santa Susana Mountains’ designation as California’s newest state historic park.

Comprising 670 acres of rolling landscapes and mountainous terrain on the west end of the Valley, the area will officially be designated Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park.

“We will have a special opportunity to share the newest state park with the community,” said Daniel C. Preece, superintendent of the Angeles District of the state Department of Parks and Recreation.

Preece also praised the efforts of three Chatsworth-based groups whose lobbying efforts led to the state historic park designation on Jan. 27.

Members of the Santa Susana Mountain Park Assn., the Foundation for the Preservation of the Santa Susana Mountains and the Chatsworth Historical Society are expected to attend Saturday’s dedication from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chatsworth Park South, 22360 Devonshire St. Activities will include a picnic and a 30-minute hike of the new state park.

Those attending are asked to bring a blanket and a picnic lunch. Preece said anyone planning to take part in the hike should wear a hat, sunscreen and appropriate footwear and bring a bottle of water.
