Ishoo Gets a Break and Wins

Steve Ishoo of Granada Hills High rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to beat Sonny Warda of Kennedy, 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3), in the round of 16 of the City Section individual tennis tournament Tuesday at Studio City Racquet Centre.

“It was a great match,” Granada Hils Coach Ron Wood said. “It was a real war.”

Ishoo, the Highlanders’ No. 2 singles player, moved into the quarterfinals Thursday, the first Granada Hills player to advance that far since Casey Wood did it en route to finishing third in 1992.

Chris Yoo of Granada Hills plays David Keyes of University in a makeup match today at Mountain Gate Country Club. Yoo’s match was postponed so he could take an advanced-placement test.

Vincent Hsu of Van Nuys beat Mahmood Khaledy of University, 6-3, 6-0, and Frank Vlahovic of Verdugo Hills downed Bobby Narayan of El Camino Real, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.

Granada Hills had three doubles teams reach the quarterfinals.

Deepu Murthy and Matt Weiss rallied to defeat Pierre Wang and Ryan Geist of El Camino Real, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Granada Hills’ No. 2 team of Anand Murthy and Danny Lim routed Kevin Suh and Peter Shirley of Palisades, 6-2, 6-1.

Lee Weinstein and Ali Fakhari, who played No. 1 doubles for Granada Hills, beat Geoff Gray and Matthew Jones of Dorsey.

James Magsino and Burt Newman of El Camino Real outlasted Eddie Kim of Fairfax and Mikhail Agatelov, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and Fadi Ghishan and Arash Shirehjini of Taft beat J.R. Ortiz and Justin Gest of University, 6-2, 6-1.

DIVISION I

Thousand Oaks 11, Rio Mesa 7--No. 1 singles player Phil Sheng swept his sets for the Lancers (14-5) in a first-round victory at Rio Mesa.

DIVISION II

Westlake 18, Valencia 0--Darren Joe dropped one game at No. 1 singles for the Wolverines (17-0) at the North Rancho Tennis Club.

Burbank 17, Mira Costa 1--Sophomore Eugene Shin did not lose a game at No. 2 singles for the Bulldogs at Burbank (16-4).

DIVISION III

Calabasas 10, Redondo Union 8--Alex Menchini swept at No. 1 singles for the Coyotes in a victory at Calabasas (17-4).

DIVISION IV

St. Bonaventure 13, Morro Bay 5--Mike Marquez (42-0) swept in singles for the Seraphs (14-0).

Campbell Hall 18, San Dimas 0--Sophomore Adam Zunder did not lose a game at No. 1 singles for the Vikings at the Studio City Racquet Centre.
