Furniture Warehouse Puts Stock in Floor Samples

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

If a huge furniture warehouse full of floor samples turns you on, then you’ll have a field day at Designer Interiors. The company was reviewed in this column a few years ago but because the deals are so good, I thought it was worth another visit.

The inventory in this commercial warehouse, hidden in an industrial complex, consists of furniture and accessories used on commercial photo shoots and in designer-showcase homes. Most pieces lean toward the contemporary and are highly styled.

One unusual hand-carved chair that would work in just about any room retails for $1,800, but its tag reads $650--a winner for those who want something a little different.

The collection of tables, including some made of stone and iron with hand-crafted finishes, starts at $390. A stone and faux tortoise shell desk sells for $3,000 in some decorator showrooms but you can get it here for $1,250.

Most furniture showrooms have one or two feather-and-down pieces, but Designer Interiors has a wide selection of sofas and love seats at about one-third the retail prices found at the Los Angeles Design Center. Some of the combination sets--matching sofas and love seats with designer fabrics--are selling for $890. A traditional carved dining set includes a 60-inch round table with a beveled and etched glass top on a carved wood base, plus six chairs and a matching buffet with a stone top. Recently I saw a similar group on Robertson Boulevard for $7,500, but it’s tagged here at $3,500. Cheap it isn’t, but the price is half what it would be most anywhere else.

Don’t get so carried away with the furniture that you ignore the accessories. You won’t find a better selection anywhere and all at prices about half off retail.

Designer Interiors Warehouse, 9132 Jordan Ave., Chatsworth. (818) 709-9918. Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Closed Wednesdays.

Weekend Super Sale: I doubt if there’s a bigger inventory of upholstery fabrics anywhere in the San Fernando Valley than at Stern’s Draperies. Just about every type of fabric here is a deal, but now there’s a special on cotton chintz floral prints. Usually they go for $14, but now they’re $6 a yard. And check out the antique satin remnants at $1--perfect for pillows. Stern’s Draperies, 13861 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks. (818) 789-3838.
