Frazar Stays Hot in Heat at Colonial
Rookie Harrison Frazar, extending his sudden hot streak, shot a six-under-par 64 Thursday and grabbed the first-round lead in the haze and heat of the MasterCard Colonial in Fort Worth.
Frazar, 26, a former University of Texas roommate of reigning British Open champion Justin Leonard, toured the 7,010-yard, par-70 Colonial Country Club course in 31-33 and took a two-shot lead over David Duval, former champion Lanny Wadkins, Jim Furyk and Phil Blackmar.
“It’s been a whirlwind for me, no doubt about it,” said Frazar, a Dallas native who tied for second last week at his hometown GTE Byron Nelson Classic. “The phone’s been ringing off the hook.”
Frazar’s round included only one bogey, at the par-four 14th, where he overshot the green and chipped poorly.

Playing in only her second tournament on the LPGA Tour, former field hockey star Sara Hallock shot a five-under 67 to share the first-round lead with Tammie Green at the Corning Classic in Corning, N.Y.
Colleen Walker, Brandie Burton and Stephanie Lowe were one shot behind at 68.
A fast course, wind gusts in excess of 30 mph that blew down a tree along the 10th fairway, and temperatures dropping through the 60s made play difficult all day. Still, Hallock, who started on the back nine during the relative calm of the early morning, managed four birdies and an eagle on the 449-yard, par-five fifth hole.
Green made a strong run during the blustery afternoon. She had two birdies and an eagle on the front nine and went to seven under with birdies at 11, 12 and 14 before bogeying the next two holes to fall back into a tie for the lead.

Arizona State freshman Grace Park duplicated her record-tying seven-under 65 from the opening round at University Ridge Course in Madison, Wis., helping the defending champion Sun Devils to an astonishing 13-stroke lead at the halfway point of the women’s NCAA championships.
Park’s 14-under total after two rounds gave her a four-stroke lead over USC freshman Jennifer Rosales and broke the NCAA championship 36-hole record--by seven strokes--set by Furman’s Cindy Davis in 1983.
“For her to shoot a 65 the first day, wow! That’s great,” Sun Devil Coach Linda Vollstedt said. “But back to back? Unbelievable.”
Only two other golfers broke 70 on the 6,033-yard layout Thursday, including Rosales, who shot a six-under 66.
Arizona State, winner of four of the last five team titles, is the only team under par halfway through the 72-hole medal play tournament at the University of Wisconsin course.
Arizona is in second at two over, followed by Florida at five over and Duke at seven over.
