Update--Tonight’s game features the winners of the last two Western Baseball League championships. The Vigilantes won league titles in 1995 and ’96 when the team was based in Long Beach. The Heat, after finishing the 1997 regular season at 45-45, won the league title in its first year by defeating Reno, three games to one. The Vigilantes, who finished 39-51 last season, will start Mike Smith, who was named the league’s pitcher of the year in 1997, when he posted a 10-4 record with a 2.95 earned-run average.
