Ennis Eager to Gauge Chatsworth’s Might

Share

John Ennis probably won’t pitch much against Chatsworth High on Tuesday after throwing 110 pitches in a 4-1 victory over North Hollywood on Friday, but the senior is looking forward to playing the top-seeded Chancellors in the quarterfinals.

“I’d like to see if they’re as good as everybody says they are,” Ennis said. “It’s like they’re the Dodgers or something.”

A teammate can give personal testimony. First baseman John Mort was a junior varsity player at Chatsworth last year.

An edge: Veteran El Camino Real Coach Mike Maio may have found a lucky charm. His 4-year-old grandson, Mike, showed up for the first time to watch one of his games Friday.

The Conquistadores defeated Poly, 12-0, so little Mike might be invited back all the way to Dodger Stadium, where the City championship will be played June 11.

El Camino Real designated hitter Michael Grossman, batting .393, missed the game against Poly after twisting his knee during practice.

Terrific trio: The Westlake baseball team’s three-man platoon at first base has paid huge dividends.

David Williamson, Ethan East and Doug Hutton each have played the position and Coach Chuck Berrington said the trio has combined for a .400 batting average with eight home runs and 35 runs batted in.

Hutton has been the hottest lately and has started most often. Friday, his three-run home run provided the winning margin in a 6-5 victory over Moorpark in a Southern Section Division III quarterfinal game at Westlake.

“I could have just gone with one of them but all three have contributed,” Berrington said.

Holding their breath: The most startling aspect of Crescenta Valley’s 3-2 victory over Palmdale in a Division I quarterfinal baseball game on Friday was the number of runs Palmdale scored.

Crescenta Valley went ahead, 3-1, in the third inning, but didn’t figure the lead would hold. Palmdale went into the game averaging just under nine runs and had hit 42 home runs.

“We were saying every inning that it wasn’t going to be enough,” Crescenta Valley Coach Phil Torres said. “We knew that they could swing the bats.”

Road warriors: For Quartz Hill, the road to the Southern Section Division II softball title must go through Santa Maria Righetti.

Twice.

The Rebels, who drove four hours to Santa Maria for a quarterfinal game Thursday, must repeat the trip today after their scoreless game was suspended in the fifth inning because of rain.

The game will resume at 1 p.m. with Quartz Hill batting with two out and Shauna Murray on first base.
