Couples, Mattiace Share Lead at Wet Memorial Tournament

Fred Couples and Len Mattiace were tied for the lead at nine-under-par 135 after Friday’s rain-interrupted second round of the Memorial golf tournament at Dublin, Ohio.

Harrison Frazar and Mark Calcavecchia were two strokes behind, followed by a group of seven players including Tom Lehman at 138, and Ernie Els, Justin Leonard, Davis Love III and Steve Jones in another group at 139.

Juli Inkster shot a four-under 68 and Hollis Stacy had a 67 as two of the LPGA’s veteran players made a move to the top of the leaderboard at the Rochester International at Rochester, N.Y. Inkster and Stacy are in a four-way tie for first at five-under 139 with Moira Dunn and Joan Pitcock, who shared the first-round lead, and Brandie Burton.

Larry Nelson shook off an opening bogey to shoot a seven-under 65, matching the course record and giving him a two-shot lead over Walter Morgan and Al Geiberger after the first round of the Pittsburgh Senior Classic.

Senior Bill Lunde and junior Chris Berry shot five-under 67s to help Nevada Las Vegas open up a 10-shot lead over Clemson going into today’s final 18 holes of the NCAA team championships at Albuquerque. UNLV is 35 under par. UCLA is fifth at 16 under.

Minnesota freshman James McLean shot a 65 and shares the individual lead with defending champion Charles Warren of Clemson at 202, 14 under.

Rusty Wallace, winner of the last three races on the asphalt surface at Dover Downs in Delaware, took the pole position for the MBNA Platinum 400 with a lap of 155.898 mph.

Christian Fittipaldi was knocked unconscious in a crash that split his Swift-Ford in half during the opening practice for the Miller Lite 200 at West Allis, Wis.

Dr. Steve Olvey, director of medical affairs for the CART FedEx Championship Series, said Fittipaldi, 27, regained consciousness about three minutes after the impact on the Milwaukee Mile. Robert Moreno will replace Fittipaldi for the weekend.

Air France pilots are threatening to walk out for two weeks starting Monday over the company’s lower salary scale for new hires and working conditions. The strike would overlap the June 10 start of the World Cup. . . . Yugoslavia, the final opponent for the United States in the first round of the World Cup, beat Nigeria, 3-0, at Belgrade. The Nigerians are coached by former U.S. and Mexico coach Bora Milutinovic.

Matt Breen and Jean-Noel Grinda of UCLA defeated Nick Crowell and Paul Martin of Texas, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to advance to the doubles quarterfinals of the NCAA men’s championships at Athens, Ga.

In singles quarterfinal matches, top-seeded Pavel Kudrnac of Oklahoma State was upset by Daniel Anderson of Virginia Commonwealth, 6-4, 6-4, and Stanford’s Bob Bryan defeated USC’s George Bastl, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Vanessa Webb became Duke’s first NCAA women’s champion when she defeated Ania Bleszynski of Stanford, 6-3, 6-4, at South Bend, Ind.

In doubles, Florida’s top-seeded and two-time defending champions Dawn Bush and Stephanie Nickitas lost their bid to become the first doubles team to win three consecutive titles, losing to California’s Amanda Augustus and Amy Jensen, 7-5, 6-3.

Deion Sanders had surgery to remove bone chips from his left ankle Friday, but the Dallas Cowboys said the cornerback isn’t expected to miss any of training camp, which starts in six weeks. . . . Former NBA referee Michael Mathis was sentenced to three years’ probation after pleading guilty to filing a false and fraudulent income-tax return. Mathis, 55, was also fined $2,000 and sentenced to 120 days home confinement in Cincinnati. . . . Patrick Forte, 48, a former Patriot executive, has pleaded guilty to larceny and tax evasion after accepting money from football fans he had promised to get Super Bowl tickets.
