Law enforcement agencies throughout Ventura County plan to send representatives to the funeral of longtime Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block today at the Hollywood Bowl.

Officials from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and the Ventura, Oxnard and Simi Valley police departments said Saturday they would send honor guards to an 11 a.m. procession.

Block, who was 74, served as Los Angeles County’s top cop for nearly 17 years. He died Thursday evening, three days after undergoing surgery to remove a massive blood clot in his brain.

His supporters are urging voters to cast ballots for him Tuesday instead of challenger Lee Baca so the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors can appoint his successor.

In Ventura’s seaside Pierpont neighborhood, where Block owned a weekend home, residents remembered the sheriff as a man who liked to chat with everyone.

“The guy was a great person,” said Joe Hanna, who lived next door to Block’s Ventura getaway. “He liked to do yardwork and walk his dog down to the beach. He was a very friendly man, which surprised me, given his position. We’re all going to miss him here on this street.”
