Sinkhole to Cause a Few Days’ Congestion

Motorists were detoured around a large sinkhole on Artesia Boulevard on Monday and will probably have to fight traffic or find alternate routes until Thursday, according to public works officials.

The sinkhole, measuring 30 to 60 feet wide and about 5 feet deep, opened late Sunday or early Monday when a water main broke under the road between Valley View Street and Knott Avenue.

The main might have been cracked or damaged much earlier when heavy equipment was used to put in a new storm drain, said Nabil Henein, deputy city engineer.

The damage may have gone unnoticed until the water permeated the ground.

“We are still investigating the cause,” Henein said.

The pipe itself was fixed Monday, but crews will need a few days to finish checking for other potential damage points and to repair the road.

Police have one lane of traffic open in each direction of the road, and work may be done by Thursday afternoon, Henein said.
