Cross-country

Villa became the first Irvine runner in four years to win the Big West Conference race.

She finished in 17 minutes 14 seconds to help the Anteaters finished second. Villa, a senior, is UCI’s 11th individual champion and the first since Jo-Jo Yaba in 1985.

Villa finished 10 seconds ahead of second-place Melinda Campbell of Boise State.

THIS WEEK

Men’s basketball: Stan Divranos had 22 points and eight rebounds as the White defeated the Blue, 82-71, Sunday in an intrasquad game. Guard Zamiro Bennem scored 25 points to lead the Blue. The Anteaters face the University of Calgary in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Women’s basketball: Guard Jeanine Horton, a transfer from Howard College, should fill the defensive void left by Sabrina Roberson’s graduation. Irvine plays Riverland Raiders in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Bren Center.

Women’s soccer: Defender Kelly Dohmann, who has not completely recovered from knee surgery last year, has been getting advice about playing with pain from Angel outfielder Tim Salmon. Dohmann baby-sits for the Salmon family. Irvine closes its regular season by hosting Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Water polo: Third-ranked Irvine, which has won 10 of 11 games, visits No. 8 Long Beach State at 7 tonight and No. 2 UCLA at noon Sunday.

Men’s soccer: Irvine is at No. 15 Stanford at 7 p.m. Friday and at California at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Women’s volleyball: Irvine hosts North Texas Thursday and plays at Cal State Fullerton Saturday. Both matches are at 7 p.m.

Men’s Soccer

Jackson scored two goals in each of Cal State Fullerton’s two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation games last weekend. He leads the Titans with 14 goals in 17 games, one ahead of Art Ramirez. The Titans defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 5-0, and UC Santa Barbara, 4-1. Jackson, a junior from San Diego Claremont High, was a redshirt last season after transferring from San Diego State.

THIS WEEK

Men’s soccer: The Titans (12-4-1, 5-1) remain in the running for the MPSF title with UCLA and Washington after victories over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara last week in Titan Stadium. All three teams have one conference loss. Fullerton goes on the road for two key games this week, at California Friday and Stanford Sunday.

Women’s soccer: The Titans, out of the running for the Big West Conference title, play their final home game at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Loyola Marymount, then close the season at 5 p.m. Saturday at UC Irvine. The Titans (8-8-1, 5-2-1) were idle last weekend. Senior Dolores Browning will finish her career as the school’s all-time goal-scoring leader.

Women’s volleyball: The Titans face New Mexico State Thursday and UC Irvine Saturday in their final appearances in Titan Gym this season. Both matches start at 7 p.m. Fullerton (7-16, 1-11) has lost nine consecutive Big West matches after losing to Pacific and Long Beach State last week.

Wrestling: The Titans open the season at 1 p.m. Friday at UC Davis. The Titans are led by All-American Joey Coughran, eighth in the NCAA meet at 129 pounds last season.
