Devils Continue Their Mastery of Rangers

Scott Stevens scored the first goal this season by a New Jersey Devil defenseman on a long slap shot late in the second period and the Devils defeated the New York Rangers, 3-1, on Tuesday night at East Rutherford, N.J., ending the Rangers’ six-game unbeaten streak.

The Devils extended their unbeaten streak against the Rangers to 11 games (7-0-4) by becoming the first team in three games to score against Mike Richter. He had come into the game after shutouts against the Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes, but he was beaten by Brendan Morrison, Stevens and Jay Pandolfo.

Stevens got the winner with 1:57 to play in the second period on a shot from just inside the blue line.

“It rolled just before he shot it,” said Richter, who had 26 saves. “He shot it hard, it was lucky, it just dipped a little bit. If I went down in a lazy way it would have hit me, but I stayed up to control the rebound and it just went under where my glove was.”

Buffalo 4, Boston 2--Dominik Hasek became the winningest goaltender in Sabre history with his 157th victory, moving past Don Edwards at Buffalo.

Curtis Brown’s first goal of the season proved to be the winner.

Calgary 5, Detroit 2--Tyler Moss won his first NHL game since January and Cory Stillman scored two goals at Detroit as the Flames handed the Red Wings their third consecutive loss.

Theoren Fleury and Andrew Cassels both had a goal and an assist and Steve Dubinsky scored for the Flames, who were 0-6-2 against the Red Wings since last beating them Oct. 11, 1996.

Pittsburgh 4, Philadelphia 4--Maxim Galanov scored his first two NHL goals, including the game-tying score with 5:24 left, as the Penguins rallied from a three-goal deficit at Pittsburgh.

The Flyers’ three-game losing streak ended, but Philadelphia is 1-4-2 since starting the season 4-0-1.
