Billed as the largest motorcycle fund-raising event in the world, Jay Leno and Peter Fonda will lead a caravan of motorcyclists and celebrities on Love Ride 15 from Harley-Davidson of Glendale to a barbecue, trade show and concert 50 miles away at Castaic Lake, Santa Clarita. The event, featuring performances by the Steve Miller Band and George Thorogood & the Destroyers, raises funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Assn.

Movie

One of the great American westerns, Howard Hawks’ 1948 film “Red River,” about the first mass cattle drive up the Chisholm Trail, centers on an epic power struggle between cattle baron (John Wayne in one of his best roles) and stepson (Montgomery Clift in his dazzling film debut). The stellar supporting cast includes Joanne Dru, John Ireland, Harry Carey and Walter Brennan. Roger McGrath, a history professor at Pepperdine University, will speak before the film about cattle ranching during the frontier years.

It looks like a country counterpart to the KROQ Weenie Roast--the KZLA Country Cookout presents some of Nashville’s finest, topped by LeAnn Rimes and Deana Carter. The rest of the main stage lineup: Blackhawk, Suzy Bogguss, Kenny Chesney, Gary Allan, Wade Hayes, Ty Herndon, Tracy Lawrence and Rick Trevin~o. The seven-hour concert benefits the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

Jazz

Sphere, the jazz super-group that uses Thelonious Monk’s middle name as its moniker, consists of pianist Kenny Barron, saxophonist Gary Bartz, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Ben Riley. The East Coast-based foursome plays Monk’s music as well as its own mainstream originals in this rare West Coast appearance.
