Hurricanes Score Six in a Row

The Carolina Hurricanes scored six consecutive goals, including two by Jeff O’Neill, to overcome a three-goal deficit and defeat the New York Islanders, 6-3, Thursday night at Uniondale, N.Y.

O’Neill, Martin Gelinas and Kent Manderville scored in a 3:20 span of the third period. Curtis Leschyshyn and Paul Ranhei also scored for Carolina.

The Islanders took a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Eric Brewer, Mike Watt and Kenny Jonsson.

Boston 4, Toronto 1--Dmitri Khristich scored his 200th goal and Sergei Samsonov had a goal and two assists at Boston.

The Bruins won for only the second time in their last eight games. They had scored three goals in their previous three games.

Pittsburgh 4, Ottawa 2--Jan Hrdina scored the go-ahead goal with 4:06 left in the third period at Kanata, Canada.

Martin Straka, Jaromir Jagr and Robert Lang also scored for the Penguins, who fell behind, 2-0, in the first period. Chris Phillips and Vaclav Prospal scored for the Senators.

NHL Notes

Buffalo Sabre forward Matthew Barnaby was suspended for four games and fined $1,000 for a hit on Boston’s P.J. Axelsson, the NHL announced. . . . Boston forward Anson Carter ended his holdout and signed a two-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.
