The City Council has temporarily suspended a program that for more than 20 years has required businesses to pay thousands of dollars for city-owned parking spaces.
Council members agreed to the suspension until it can lower the parking costs, action recommended in a study of the crowded Downtown/Pier Bowl/North Beach areas. The cost to use city-owned lots in these areas can top $5,000 per space for the lifetime of a business.
