The Angels hired Carney Lansford, the third baseman on their first division championship team in 1979, as their new triple-A manager in Edmonton.

The managerial post will be the first for Lansford, who was the bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals for the last two seasons.

Lansford coached five seasons for Manager Tony La Russa with the Cardinals and Oakland Athletics.

“If I want to manage in the big leagues, I’m going to have to manage somewhere,” Lansford said Sunday, “and this is a nice opportunity to get back to the team I started with.”

Lansford, 41, made his major league debut with the Angels in 1978 and played three seasons in Anaheim. The Angels sent him to the Boston Red Sox in a five-player trade the brought Rick Burleson and Butch Hobson to Anaheim.
