Redevelopment Takes Center Stage
Crews are busy installing a mosaic in the foyer of the rebuilt Madrid Theatre this week in preparation for a Dec. 3 opening ceremony for the new performing arts center.
The mosaic represents construction materials used in early buildings in Canoga Park and includes a medallion engraved with a rendering of the original theater..
The work was created by Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend, an Ojai artist and a member of the design team hired by the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency, which is overseeing the project.
“The theater will bring affordable, accessible arts presentations” to West Valley residents, said Deane Leavenworth, president of Friends of the Madrid Theatre.
The new 499-seat center, which was funded by a $3.5-million federal grant, is the centerpiece of an economic revitalization project. Some of the money will be used for trees, sidewalks, lighting and street and parking improvements.
The new Madrid Theatre replaces an adult movie house that was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
