Toronto Shreds Chicago, 10-3

Toronto’s Mats Sundin scored three goals against floundering Chicago as the Maple Leafs cruised to a 10-3 victory Thursday night at Chicago, leaving the Blackhawks winless in their last eight games (0-7-1).

Sundin peppered Chicago goalie Jeff Hackett for his sixth career hat trick. Hackett was pulled three minutes into the final period after allowing his fifth and sixth goals on only 21 shots.

Toronto then added four goals against backup Mark Fitzpatrick, scoring six times overall in the final period.

It was the first time in 10 years the Blackhawks had given up 10 goals in a game. They lost 10-3 to Boston at home in October 1988.

San Jose 3, Carolina 0--Jeff Friesen scored a pair of goals and Mike Vernon stopped all 20 shots he faced for his 20th career shutout as the Sharks won at San Jose.

Vancouver 4, Calgary 3--Defenseman Bryan McCabe accounted for three goals in his first game back after a contract dispute as the Canucks won at Calgary, Canada.

McCabe’s second-period power-play goal on a slap shot from the blue line capped his return after a 13-game holdout that resulted in a two-year, $4.775 million contract.

New York Islanders 4, Montreal 0--Tommy Salo made 21 saves for his league-leading fourth shutout and Mariusz Czerkawski scored his first two goals this season in the Islanders’ victory at Uniondale, N.Y.

Buffalo 2, Washington 0--Dominik Hasek made 23 saves at Washington for his third shutout of the year and 36th of his career.

Florida 2, Philadelphia 1--Rookie Mark Parrish scored two second-period goals and goaltender Kirk McLean made 39 saves at Philadelphia as the Panthers extended the Flyers’ winless streak to seven games (0-5-2).

Edmonton 1, Ottawa 1--Andrei Kovalenko scored with 14 seconds left in the third period to lift Edmonton into a tie at Kanata, Canada.

The financially troubled Penguins and the city of Pittsburgh have settled a dispute over $1 million in back taxes. The city on Thursday withdrew a lawsuit in which it sought to collect unpaid amusement taxes on ticket sales for games at the Civic Arena. . . . The Colorado Avalanche traded winger Keith Jones to the Philadelphia Flyers for left wing Shjon Podein. . . .
