Curry Collects 22 for Openers

Edniesha Curry collected 22 points and six assists, and Viveca Lof added 20 points and seven rebounds to help Cal State Northridge defeat Oakland University, 83-72, in a nonconference women’s basketball opener Saturday night at Northridge.

Curry made six of 11 shots and nine of 10 free throws, and Lof made seven of 12 shots and six of seven free throws.

Northridge benefited from 32 turnovers by Oakland, scoring 30 points off the miscues.

The Matadors also got 11 points from LaShaunda Fowler and 10 points by Lynda Amari.

Sarah Judd scored 20 points for Oakland and Tamika Bates added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

In other women’s basketball games:

The Master’s 64, Biola 53--Forward Elizabeth Hansell had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Corinne Wiseman added 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Mustangs (3-0) in a nonconference game at The Master’s.

The Mustangs outrebounded the Eagles (1-1), 59-32.

Canyons 71, Cypress 53--Alicia Weber scored 13 points on five-of-eight shooting for the Cougars in a nonconference victory at Canyons.

The Cougars (1-0) allowed only three baskets but Cypress made 11 of 21 free throws in the first half.

Valley 77, Victor Valley 53--Maricela Rodriguez had 22 points and Porsche McAllister had 11 points and 12 assists for the Monarchs in a nonconference opener at Valley.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 86, Riverside 78--Kenya Carruthers made three consecutive three-pointers and finished with 14 points for the Monarchs (2-0) to spark a 13-0 run midway through the second half of a semifinal victory at the Mt. San Antonio tournament.

Glendale 90, Victor Valley 60--The forwards did the damage for the Vaqueros (2-0) in a Victor Valley tournament semifinal.

Louis Fernandez had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Chris Moreland had 16 points and 11 rebounds.
