Driving on Shaffer Street will soon be a little bumpy. As a last-ditch effort to slow traffic, city workers will build “swells,” or small speed bumps, along the blocks of Shaffer that run between Taft and Meats avenues.

Public Works Director Harry W. Thomas said the swells are about 3 1/2 inches high and 12 feet long, offering a more gradual swell than speed bumps typically in shopping centers. The bumps were one of the first initiatives to come out of a new residential traffic management program, Thomas said. City Council members unanimously agreed to spend $15,000 to install five swells last week. Warning signs will be installed.
