The Louisiana State men’s basketball team will be barred from 1999 postseason tournaments and lose six scholarships over the next three years because a booster paid Lester Earl $5,000 to play basketball there, the NCAA announced.

Earl had accused former LSU assistant Johnny Jones of paying him to attend the school, but the NCAA investigation cleared both Jones and retired coach Dale Brown, who was in charge of the program during Earl’s brief stay at LSU. The school will be on probation for the next three years, losing two scholarships each year. The school will also forfeit the five victories in which Earl played.

No charges were filed against the Hampton (Va.) University women’s coach, her husband and an assistant coach who were arrested and handcuffed Monday in Lubbock, Texas, over what the coach said was a false accusation that they tried to run a con game. All those arrested were black, and Coach Patricia Bibbs said she believed race played a role in the arrests. The university and the NAACP are planning to investigate.
