Markey Gives State of the City Address

In one of his last acts as mayor of Thousand Oaks, Mike Markey gave the State of the City address Tuesday.

Speaking to more than 200 business and civic leaders, Markey said the best way to evaluate the city is as others do.

“We are seen as leaders through the eyes of others as we continually seek challenge and vision,” he said. “It is a very humbling and gratifying experience to see your community appreciated and respected through the eyes of others.”

Markey said that during his yearlong term, which ended Tuesday night, he greeted officials from as far away as Sweden, Australia and Armenia.

“Mayors from other cities and countries view our community as a magnificent and prosperous one,” Markey said. “Each mayor was interested to learn how we develop such a well-planned community.”

Other highlights of the past year included Thousand Oaks being selected for the regional headquarters of the National Park Service and the city’s presentation to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which showcased the Civic Arts Plaza.

Markey’s luncheon speech was hosted by the Conejo Valley/Thousand Oaks Chamber of Commerce. The ceremonial post of mayor is rotated among the council’s five members on an annual basis.
