Like Sean “Puffy” Combs and Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland was more renowned for his producing than his offbeat rapping before the release of his debut solo album. Although he rapped on various singles and with partner Magoo on their 1997 album, “Welcome to Our World,” Tim Mosley rose to prominence supplying anthemic beats for Aaliyah, Missy Elliott and others.

While the thoroughly enjoyable “Tim’s Bio” is billed as Timbaland’s solo bow, it’s hardly a one-man show--nearly every song features at least one other performer. Nonetheless, the self-produced collection glides along smoothly thanks to its host’s silky production. Whether borrowing from television theme music, lacing speedy hip-hop tracks or creating steamy love-song backdrops, Timbaland keeps the atmosphere light and playful.

He also raps on a number of cuts, but his production is far more impressive. Guests Jay-Z, Aaliyah, Kelly Price, Magoo, Mad Skillz and others carry their weight, tailoring their deliveries to Timbaland’s diverse sounds. Like many of today’s hip-hop releases, the album’s lyrics don’t bother transcending chest-thumping, good times and romantic endeavors.
