Poll Favorable for Patriots

The majority of Connecticut residents support using public funds to build a football stadium in Hartford for the New England Patriots, according to a survey.

Sixty percent of residents polled for the Journal Inquirer of Manchester said they support a plan to spend $350 million and build the 68,000-seat stadium along the Connecticut River. Twenty-two percent opposed the expenditure, while 18% were undecided.

Patriot owner Robert Kraft has agreed to move his team to Hartford if the Connecticut legislature approves the stadium plan.

Offensive tackle Tony Berti, who spent the first four seasons of his career with the San Diego Chargers but has missed all of this year while on injured reserve, signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

Berti, 6 feet 6 and 300 pounds, was released off injured reserve by the Chargers earlier this week.

Lamar McHan, who played quarterback for the Chicago Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Colts and San Francisco 49ers before coaching for the New Orleans Saints, has died. He was 65 when he had a heart attack Monday in Jefferson, La.

A native of Lake Village, Ark., McHan was a highly recruited quarterback and set school records as an All-American at Arkansas.

The Chicago Cardinals chose McHan in the first round of the NFL draft in 1954.

He was a quarterbacks and receivers coach with the Saints until 1984, working with quarterback Archie Manning and serving under head coaches John North, Dick Nolan and Bum Phillips.
