A woman hit by a car driven by KNBC-TV medical editor Dr. Bruce Hensel remained in critical condition Friday at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, hospital officials said.
Pauline McClurg of Burbank is on a respirator in the intensive care unit after suffering a severe head fracture in Wednesday’s accident, hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda said.
McClurg, 88, and an unidentified 81-year-old woman were hit by Hensel’s car at about 9:40 a.m. in the crosswalk at the Ventura Freeway’s Pass Avenue offramp.
The second woman was released Wednesday from Providence St. Joseph Medical Center after being treated for a fractured left ankle and foot, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Burbank police said no charges have been filed. It has not been determined if Hensel had a green light when he drove through the crosswalk, or if the pedestrians had the right of way, said Sgt. Pat Lynch of the Burbank Police Department’s Traffic Division.
A decision will be made Monday on whether the California Highway Patrol will take over the investigation, because the accident happened within 50 feet of a freeway offramp, Lynch said.
