Development Foes Hold Walk-a-Thon

Share

Undeterred by the platefuls of turkey and mashed potatoes they presumably ate the night before, about 100 people braved the foggy mist Friday morning for a walk-a-thon to support Pierce College’s farmland.

The event raised more than $3,000 for the farm’s endowment, said organizer Carrie Biggs-Adams.

The fund-raiser is one in a series of recent parries aimed at deflecting plans to develop 240 acres at the beleaguered college.

When Pierce solicited proposals for a 20-year lease on the parcel, two bidders suggested only agricultural uses for the land.

Opponents of the development got a temporary boost Tuesday, when Pierce rejected the development bids it had received because they would not generate money quickly enough.
