Hunters Discover Human Remains

Human remains have been found in the Hungry Valley area of Los Padres National Forest, Ventura County sheriff’s officials said Saturday.

The discovery was made by two bird hunters from Los Angeles about 2 p.m. Friday in the far eastern reaches of the forest, where Ventura County meets Los Angeles and Kern counties.

An autopsy Saturday determined the victim’s gender and the cause of death, but identification of the remains had not been made, said Craig Stevens, senior deputy coroner at the Ventura County medical examiner’s office.

Stevens declined to give a description of the victim or discuss the manner of death. He referred most questions to sheriff’s officials.

“We don’t want to release any more than we can until they get a suspect or suspects and we get an identification,” Stevens said. “Getting an ID may help the [sheriff’s] major crime guys go in a particular direction.”

Sheriff’s Capt. Keith Parks said no further details would be released Saturday.

“They are not giving out any information because of the ongoing nature of the investigation,” Parks said.
