Quake Shakes Inland Empire

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake centered in the San Bernardino Mountains six miles west of San Gorgonio peak rattled the Inland Empire on Thursday morning and was felt as far as Orange County, Caltech seismologists said.
There were no reports of damage or injuries from the 11:18 a.m. quake, which was an aftershock of a 4.8 temblor that occurred Aug. 16 in the same vicinity.
Lucy Jones, scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Pasadena office, said that there have been about 200 quakes associated with the current sequence in the last six weeks, but that the San Bernardino County quakes will probably tail off.
Jones said the epicenter is about four miles from a comparatively active segment of the San Andreas fault, but is far enough away so that no larger San Andreas quake is expected in the immediate future.
