Two former officers of the Los Angeles International Airport police union were arraigned Friday on charges of grand theft for allegedly embezzling about $100,000 in union funds, authorities said.

Gail Marie Brown-Rall, 46, the former union secretary, and Dax Clarence Heramis, 56, the former treasurer of the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Assn., were arrested Thursday. The two, who live in Los Angeles, pleaded not guilty Friday. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Oct. 16.

Heramis, now retired, and Brown-Rall, who remains on the airport force, were each charged with one count of grand theft after an investigation by the Sheriff’s Department, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office said.

The investigation, prompted by union suspicions about expenditures in 1993 and 1994, turned up checks made out to Brown-Rall and others to “cash” that were used by Heramis, the district attorney’s office said.
