The Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team was competitive with nationally ranked San Diego State on Friday before losing, 1-0, on an overtime goal in the nonconference match at San Diego.

The winning shot came when the Aztecs took quick advantage of a foul called six minutes into overtime on Northridge defender Pam Karbowski, who was injured on the play. Matador Coach Brian Wiesner said as Karbowski’s teammates moved to assist her, San Diego State’s Kaycee McClure dribbled in alone on Northridge goalkeeper Tawni Takagi and scored.

“We played a great game but we just couldn’t finish it up,” Wiesner said.

Tenth-ranked San Diego State (8-1) held an 18-6 shot advantage. The Matadors (2-8) have lost 18 of their last 21 games dating back to the 1997 season.
