Oh, Jimmy Boy, What a Tribute

Share

The public memorial to Jim Murray at Dodger Stadium was undoubtedly the greatest tribute to a sportswriter that ever occurred.

The warm, heartfelt words by Al Michaels, Chris McCarron, Al Davis, Jerry West, Chick Hearn, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Vin Scully and Bill Dwyre brought smiles and tears.

The Dodgers weren’t playing until that evening. The stadium belonged to Jim.

For those of us in attendance, it was a once-in-a-lifetime event, a marvelous farewell to a special human being. As Bill Dwyre remarked in his closing comments, “I hate to see this end. I wish we could stay and do it all over again.”

Jim was a colleague and a friend throughout his 37 years at The Times. There’ll never be another like him.

In a life too often punctuated by idiocy and hypocrisy, the farewell tribute to Jim Murray was remarkable.

I laughed. I cried and I’ll remember that “soft” afternoon forever. Thank you so much.
